What is Linux?

Linux is a free computer operating system developed by Linus Torvalds and a world-wide community of developers over the Internet. Originally released in 1991, Linux has grown from a small community of users to one of the most popular operating systems in the world, powering everything from web servers to desktop computers to smart phones.

Linux is released under a free software license called the GNU General Public License (GPL). This license ensures that Linux source code will always be available to it's users to use, modify, and redistribute as they see fit.
